DAY 01
Arrive Indore – Drive to Maheshwar (90 km / 2.5 hrs)
Welcome to Madhya Pradesh! On arrival at Indore Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted by our driver and escorted on a picturesque drive to Maheshwar, a serene riverside town resting on the sacred banks of the Narmada.
Known for its tranquil ghats and heritage temples, Maheshwar has been a spiritual and cultural hub since ancient times, with legends from the Mahabharata and Ramayana echoing through its streets.
This elegant town was also the capital of the famed Holkar queen, Rani Ahilyabai, whose legacy is deeply embedded in its architecture and soul.
The rest of the day is kept free for you to relax and unwind at your heritage hotel, soaking in the peaceful rhythm of river life and the distant sound of temple bells.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Maheshwar.
DAY 02
In Maheshwar
Wake up to the soulful chants and gentle murmur of the Narmada River as you begin your day in Maheshwar — a town where history, devotion, and handloom artistry flow together.
Start your exploration with a walk through the Ahilya Fort complex, a regal riverside palace that once served as the seat of the legendary Rani Ahilyabai Holkar. Wander through its timeworn stone corridors, temples built by the queen herself, and scenic balconies offering sweeping views of the ghats below.
Descend to the Maheshwar Ghats, where pilgrims gather and daily rituals unfold beside beautifully carved temples like the Kaleshwar and Rajarajeshwar Mandirs. The serenity here is deeply spiritual — it’s no surprise Maheshwar is often called the Varanasi of Central India.
Later, step into the vibrant world of Maheshwari handloom weaving, a craft revived and championed by Rani Ahilyabai. Visit a local workshop to witness skilled artisans creating the town’s signature Maheshwari saris — elegant, lightweight fabrics known for their fine stripes, checks, and zari borders.
As the sun sets, return to the ghats or your hotel terrace to watch the golden light reflect on the Narmada, a moment of tranquillity that captures Maheshwar’s eternal charm.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Maheshwar.
DAY 03
Maheshwar – Mandu (via Bakawan)
This morning, leave the riverfront charm of Maheshwar and head towards the mystical hilltop citadel of Mandu, a poetic blend of Afghan architecture, romance, and ruin.
En route, make a meaningful stop at Bakawan, a quaint village renowned for its heritage craft — hand-carved wooden printing blocks. Interact with the artisans and see how intricate floral and geometric patterns are skillfully etched into teakwood, keeping alive a centuries-old tradition used in block printing.
As you ascend the plateau to Mandu, the scenery changes dramatically — dry deciduous forests, sudden vistas, and surreal baobab trees, native to Africa but mysteriously flourishing here, lend Mandu an almost otherworldly aura.
By early afternoon, you’ll reach Mandu, the ancient city of joy. Once the monsoon capital of the Malwa sultans, Mandu is perched atop the Vindhya ranges, surrounded by deep gorges and lush valleys. Its crumbling palaces, poetic pavilions, and quiet lakes whisper tales of bygone grandeur and unfulfilled love.
Check in to your heritage stay and enjoy your first glimpse of the surrounding ruins — perhaps catching the sunset from Rupmati’s Pavilion, where the romance between poet-prince Baz Bahadur and the beautiful singer Rani Rupmati still lingers in the air.
Dinner and overnight in Mandu.
DAY 04
Mandu – City of Joy and Stone Poetry
Wake up in the dreamlike landscape of Mandu, where every stone seems to hum with poetry, and every ruin carries a whisper from the past.
Start your day at the iconic Jahaz Mahal, or “Ship Palace” — a long, elegant structure that appears to float between two shimmering lakes. Built during the reign of Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji, this palace was designed for his harem of thousands. The airy corridors, tranquil pools, and open terraces offer a glimpse into a life of opulence and leisure.
Walk over to the nearby Hindola Mahal, the “Swinging Palace,” named for its unusually sloped walls. It’s one of India’s most unique medieval structures, both minimalist and grand — a rare example of Afghan simplicity fused with regional elegance.
Next, visit the Royal Enclave, a fortified compound with water channels, pleasure pavilions, and the sombre ruins of courtly life. Then head across the plateau to the story-rich Baz Bahadur’s Palace, a blend of Rajput and Islamic styles, known for its echoing halls and serene views.
Just a short walk away, perched dramatically over the Nimar plains, lies Rupmati’s Pavilion. This is where the lovestruck queen gazed longingly at the distant Narmada River each day, her devotion immortalized in stone.
The view from here at sunset — the rolling plains below bathed in golden light — is unforgettable.
Take your time exploring the romantic legends and architectural marvels of Mandu. The air is still, the monuments weathered, but the stories endure.
Dinner and overnight in Mandu.
DAY 05
Mandu to Omkareshwar – Sacred Island on the Narmada
Leave behind the romantic ruins of Mandu as you journey south through the lush Nimar region, where the landscape slowly shifts from ancient forts to forested river valleys.
The drive is scenic and soulful, dotted with villages, mango orchards, and glimpses of rural Madhya Pradesh.
By afternoon, arrive at Omkareshwar, one of India’s 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. This sacred town sits on the banks of the Narmada River, wrapped around a divine island said to be naturally shaped like the holy symbol ‘Om’.
Cross the arched bridge or take a boat to the island temple, where bells echo and devotees chant by the river. The Omkareshwar Temple, with its tiered shikhara and spiritual energy, draws pilgrims from across India. You can also trek the Om Parikrama Path — a sacred 7 km trail around the island, dotted with shrines, caves, and river views.
As dusk falls, witness the evening aarti on the ghats, when priests wave oil lamps in rhythmic unison, and the Narmada glows with a thousand flickering flames. It's a deeply moving moment — serene, sacred, and timeless.
Dinner and overnight stay in Omkareshwar.
DAY 06
Omkareshwar to Ujjain – In the Footsteps of the Cosmic Shiva
After a soul-stirring sunrise on the Narmada, depart from Omkareshwar and head north to Ujjain, one of India’s seven holiest cities and a key Jyotirlinga destination on the spiritual map.
Ujjain, perched on the banks of the Shipra River, is a city where time blends seamlessly with eternity. Ancient legends say it was once the home of Lord Shiva and a center of astronomical learning. Today, its lanes still hum with Vedic chants and temple bells.
The spiritual heart of Ujjain is the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the most powerful of the 12 Jyotirlingas. This temple is unique — its lingam is south-facing (dakshinamukhi) and believed to be swayambhu (self-manifested). Visit during the day and, if available, witness the mesmerizing Bhasma Aarti (performed at dawn with sacred ash).
Explore other sacred spots like the Harsiddhi Temple, glowing with oil lamps, and Kal Bhairav Temple, where devotees offer liquor to the fierce guardian of the city. Stroll along Ram Ghat, where sadhus, astrologers, and pilgrims gather, and dip your feet in the Shipra — one of the holiest rivers of India.
As the sun sets, the evening aarti on the ghats transforms the riverside into a divine theatre of light, sound, and devotion.
Dinner and overnight stay in Ujjain.
