DAY 02

Gateway of India & Elephanta Caves

After a buffet breakfast, your Mumbai exploration begins at the majestic Gateway of India — a major landmark overlooking Mumbai Harbour. Designed by Scottish architect George Wittet, this grand basalt arch blends Mughal and Hindu architectural styles and was built in 1924 to commemorate the 1911 visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India.

From here, board a motor launch for a scenic 9-nautical-mile boat ride to the Elephanta Caves (closed on Mondays). Located on Elephanta Island, these ancient rock-cut temples date back to between 450 and 750 AD. Known as Gharapuri (“Fortress City”) in ancient times, the island was renamed by the Portuguese after a large stone elephant sculpture near the shore. Climb 100 steps to reach the caves, famous for their intricate sculptures dedicated to Hindu deities.

Return by boat to the Gateway of India, and then embark on a half-day sightseeing tour of Mumbai’s highlights.

Lunch is on your own at the renowned Taj Mumbai or your preferred location.

The afternoon is free for shopping or personal exploration. Return to your hotel by early evening for rest.

DAY 03

Mumbai – Heritage, Culture & Art

Start your day with breakfast at the Trident Hotel before heading out for a rich cultural and historical journey.

First stop, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) — an architectural marvel completed in 1888. Designed by British architect Frederick William Stevens, the station was modelled after London’s St Pancras Station and took 10 years to build. Originally named to honour Queen Victoria, it was renamed in 1996 to celebrate the legendary 17th-century Maratha king, Chhatrapati Shivaji. This UNESCO World Heritage Site perfectly blends Victorian Gothic Revival and traditional Indian architectural styles.

Next, drive along Marine Drive, famously called the Queen’s Necklace. Admire the sea breeze sweeping over this U-shaped boulevard that sparkles in the evenings with streetlights resembling a shining necklace. Continue along the scenic Malabar Hill and visit the Hanging Gardens — beautifully landscaped terraced gardens overlooking Marine Drive, built atop Mumbai’s main reservoir.

Visit Mani Bhawan, the Gandhi Memorial, where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visits to Mumbai. The room where he lived is preserved exactly as it was, accompanied by photographs and models narrating key moments from his life and the independence movement.

Later, explore the Haji Ali Dargah, an iconic 15th-century mosque and tomb situated on a small island off the coast. Built in 1431 AD in honor of the saint Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, this pristine white marble structure is a revered pilgrimage site open to all faiths. Its striking architecture, flanked by delicate marble pillars, offers a peaceful spiritual experience. Note: The causeway connecting the mainland to the Dargah is accessible only during low tide.

Lunch at Khyber Restaurant, famed for its authentic Indian cuisine and rich ambiance.

After lunch, visit the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) — housed in a historic building that once hosted freedom rallies by leaders like Gandhi and Nehru. The gallery displays an impressive collection of Indian and international art, from Pablo Picasso to Amrita Shergill. Explore four floors of exquisite artworks and be sure to check out the fascinating Egyptian artifacts, including mummies and statues. NGMA is equipped with state-of-the-art preservation technology, making it one of the premier art galleries in India.

Return to your hotel in the evening for rest.
