Arrival in Jaipur – Journey into the Open-Air Art Gallery of Shekhawati
Welcome to Rajasthan, the land of kings, palaces, and artistic splendour. Upon arrival at Jaipur Airport or Railway Station, our representative will warmly greet you, assist with your travel documents, and introduce you to your dedicated driver and guide for the tour.
Begin your journey with a scenic 4-hour drive (approx. 130 km) to Shekhawati, a hidden gem in Rajasthan known as the “Open-Air Art Gallery of India.” Along the route, admire the evolving landscape of rural Rajasthan—arid fields, camels on the roadside, and colourful turbans dotting the horizon.
After checking into your heritage hotel in Shekhawati, enjoy a traditional lunch and prepare to dive into the rich heritage of this fresco-filled land.
Spend the afternoon exploring the ornate Havelis, Stepwells (Baolis), Cenotaphs (Chhatris), Forts, and Dharamshalas that make Shekhawati a paradise for art and history lovers. The walls of these centuries-old mansions are alive with hand-painted frescoes, depicting everything from Hindu gods and mythological scenes to colonial-era trains, British soldiers, telephones, and airplanes, offering a visual timeline of changing eras and cultural influences.
This architectural storytelling is credited to the Shekhawat Rajput rulers and the wealthy Marwari merchants, who once built their fortunes along trade routes and invested it in art and community infrastructure.
Dinner and overnight stay at your heritage hotel in Shekhawati.
DAY 02
Shekhawati to Bikaner – Frescoed Havelis & Desert Fortresses
After breakfast, begin your journey to Bikaner, a princely city surrounded by the Thar Desert, about 190 km away.
En route, stop at a remarkable site—the Nadine Le Prince Haveli in Fatehpur, an artistic treasure restored by French artist Nadine Le Prince. Originally built in 1802 by a prominent merchant, Nandlal Devra, the haveli showcases intricate frescoes that blend traditional Indian motifs with colonial themes. The lovingly restored paintings and architecture reflect a unique cross-cultural heritage rarely seen elsewhere.
Continue your journey to Bikaner, a former hub for trade and camel caravans with a glorious royal past. Upon arrival, check into your pre-booked hotel and enjoy lunch.
In the afternoon, visit the magnificent Junagarh Fort, a 16th-century marvel built by Raja Rai Singh. Unlike many forts in Rajasthan, Junagarh was not built on a hill, but it remained unconquered. The fort is made of red sandstone and marble, and houses palaces, courtyards, balconies, and temples showcasing exquisite artwork and Mughal-Rajput architectural fusion.
Also, explore Lalgarh Palace, built by Maharaja Ganga Singh between 1902 and 1926 in the Indo-Saracenic style. It is part museum, part royal residence, and part heritage hotel, offering an insight into Bikaner’s regal lifestyle and colonial past.
Evening at leisure—you may choose to relax at the hotel or explore a local market.
Dinner and overnight stay in Bikaner.
DAY 03
Bikaner to Jaisalmer – Journey into the Golden City
After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive across the desert landscape to the fabled city of Jaisalmer that cuts through rustic Rajasthan, dotted with dunes, camels, and historic desert villages.
Founded in 1156 AD by Maharaja Jaisal Singh, Jaisalmer is aptly called the “Golden City of India” due to the pervasive use of yellow sandstone in its architecture, which glows like gold under the sun. As you approach, you’ll witness the honey-hued fort rise from the desert like a mirage.
Upon arrival, check into your pre-booked hotel and enjoy a leisurely lunch. The evening is free to relax at the hotel or take a casual stroll through the local bazaars, where you’ll find vibrant textiles, embroidered goods, camel leather accessories, and traditional Rajasthani jewelry.
Dinner and overnight stay in Jaisalmer.
DAY 04
The Living Fort & Timeless Havelis of Jaisalmer
Post an early breakfast, begin your exploration with the majestic Jaisalmer Fort, also known as Sonar Quila or the Golden Fort. Built in the 12th century by Raja Jaisal, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the largest living forts in the world, with nearly a quarter of the city’s population still residing within its walls.
The fort’s yellow sandstone bastions shimmer in different shades as the sun moves across the sky, creating a spectacular view from dawn to dusk. Inside, discover narrow lanes, Jain temples, carved homes, and bustling bazaars that echo the medieval spirit of the Thar Desert.
Next, visit the celebrated Patwaon Ki Haveli, a cluster of five intricately decorated mansions built over 50 years by Guman Chand Patwa and his sons, wealthy Jain traders. Admire the mirror work, fine murals, arched balconies, and jharokhas, all of which highlight the opulence of Rajputana architecture and the skilled craftsmanship of Jaisalmer’s golden age.
Continue to Salim Singh Ki Haveli, known for its unique architecture and 38 exquisitely carved balconies. Built in the 18th century, the mansion is said to resemble a dancing peacock, and its distinct design once stirred jealousy among the ruling elite.
After lunch, proceed to the serene Gadisar Lake, a 14th-century rainwater reservoir built by Raja Rawal Jaisal. Surrounded by temples, shrines, and ghats, the lake offers a peaceful retreat and great photo opportunities, especially around the ornate Krishna Temple.
Later in the day, visit Bada Bagh, a tranquil site located 6 km from the city. This beautiful complex of royal cenotaphs (chhatris) commemorates the rulers of Jaisalmer, from the 16th to the 20th century. Against the backdrop of the desert, these yellow sandstone memorials stand as silent witnesses to the grandeur and legacy of the Rajput kings.
Return to your hotel for an overnight stay in Jaisalmer.
DAY 05
Into the Heart of Rural Rajasthan – Garha Village Experience
After breakfast, leave the sandstone silhouettes of Jaisalmer behind and journey into the soul of rural Rajasthan. Today’s destination is Village Garha, a secluded hamlet nestled between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, surrounded by golden dunes on three sides. Spanning over 100 square kilometres, this untouched corner of the Thar Desert offers clean air, serene landscapes, and a rare sense of solitude—ideal for travellers seeking to reconnect with nature and traditional life.
Upon arrival, check into the only eco-luxury resort in the region—Desert Hermitage—an oasis of comfort in the middle of the desert. Enjoy an early lunch and unwind amidst the silence of this idyllic setting.
Afternoon of Cultural Immersion in Kodi Village (No Photos available)
Later in the afternoon, set out for Kodi Village, often referred to as the "abode of men". Traditionally, this part of a household is separated from the main home, where men gather for rituals related to births, marriages, and funerals. This insight into the social structure of rural Rajasthan offers a unique anthropological perspective on gender roles and customs.
Next, witness the artisanal heart of the region. Garha is renowned for Durrie (rug) weaving, a heritage craft once made from camel and goat hair, now practiced with cotton, silk, and jute. Meet the local artisans, many of whom contribute to international brands like IKEA, and watch how threads are handwoven into colourful rugs using horizontal and vertical looms.
You’ll also meet Meghwal community artisans, skilled in cot weaving—once made from the wild Aakra plant, now more often from jute and recycled cotton. Another highlight is the traditional basket weaving of the Bhil tribe, where you’ll see artisans craft “Odi” baskets from Desi Bawal wood, designed to carry grains and fodder across desert lands.
Evening: Candlelit Dinner on the Dunes
As the sun begins to set over the dunes, the owners of the Desert Hermitage will drive you to a secluded 200-foot-high dune. Here, under a canopy of stars, enjoy an exclusive candlelit dinner—a truly magical evening in the Thar. The gentle wind, flickering lanterns, and the quiet hum of desert life create an ambiance you’ll never forget.
Return to your resort for a peaceful night’s sleep, cradled in the tranquillity of remote Rajasthan.
Overnight at Desert Hermitage, Garha.
DAY 06
From the Ancient Temples of Osian to the Grandeur of Jodhpur
Begin your day with an early breakfast before setting off to Osian, an enchanting desert oasis surrounded by golden dunes and quaint hamlets. Known as the "Khajuraho of Rajasthan," Osian flourished as a vital trading hub on the ancient Silk Route from the 8th to the 12th century AD. Once called Upakesapura, it was a revered pilgrimage center during the reign of the Gurjar Pratihara dynasty, rulers of northern India from the 6th to 11th centuries.
Osian’s claim to fame lies in its remarkable cluster of 16 ancient temples, featuring a blend of Hindu and Jain architecture with exquisitely detailed carvings. Among these, the Sachiya Mata Temple, the Sun Temple, and the Mahaveera Jain Temple stand out for their graceful design and intricate stonework, dating back to between the 8th and 11th centuries. Walking through these sacred sites offers a glimpse into Rajasthan’s rich spiritual heritage and medieval craftsmanship.

Later in the day, visit the exquisite Jaswant Thada, a stunning white-marble cenotaph built in honour of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, the 33rd Rathore ruler of Jodhpur. This architectural gem sits gracefully above a serene lake, surrounded by multi-tiered gardens. The memorial, constructed from finely carved marble sheets so thin and polished they glow warmly in the sunlight, exemplifies the finesse of Rajput architecture with its delicate domes, pillars, and intricate sculptures.
Inside, the cenotaph houses portraits of Jodhpur’s Maharajas and a unique memorial dedicated to a peacock that famously flew into a royal funeral pyre. Nearby, the royal crematorium and three other cenotaphs honour the lineage of Jodhpur’s rulers.
