Architectural and Archaeological Tour of Gujarat

Apart from the palaces, forts and castles, Gujarat is blessed with the presence of much spiritual architectures as well. The temples, mosque and mausoleums architectures of Gujarat are of the great contributions of the culture. Some of the finest temples of Gujarat were found during the Solanki dynasty. In this tour, explore architectural and archaeological beauty of Gujarat.  The tour will cover visit to beautiful places like Ahmedabad, Khambhat, Palitana, Junagadh, Gondal, Modhera, and the Champaner, the UNESCOWorld Heritage Site, counting 114 monuments of historical and archaeological interest.

On the first day, when you arrive at Ahmedabad, the transfers to your hotel are pre-booked. Later, you will have a visit to the exquisitely Dada HarirStepwell built during the reign of Sultan Mahmud Shah that BaiHarirSultani, locally known as DhaiHarir. One can also visit tomb &mosque close to step well. Evening visit will be to the SidiSayed Mosque, built in 1573, which is famous around the globe for its beautifully carved marble tablet fixed on the wall of the mosque.  The mosque was built by SidiSaiyyed. In the evening, you can go on a free walk and overnight stay at hotel in Ahmedabad.  

On the day 2, after early breakfast proceed to Swami Narayan Temple for Morning heritage walk in Ahmedabad. This walking tour offers an opportunity to see the old quarters of Ahmedabad lined with the beautifully carved wooden facades of havelis. Thewalk starts at 7.45 AM and ends at Jumma Mosque at Gandhi Road. Later visit one of leading textile museum of Ahmedabad. The collections include textile swatches of Indian origin found at archaeological sites of Egypt, silk sarees from across India, double-ikat silk sarongs made in Patan for the Indonesian market, floral embroidery from Punjab, shawls from Kashmir, 18th century tie-and-dye, royal wardrobes of Rajasthan, cloth paintings and manuscripts, religious narrative cloth paintings like Pichwais and Kalamkaris, etc. Post Lunch visit Kalamkaris painting demonstration and the Sarkhej mausoleum complex and the Vishala Village complex with its superb utensils museum. Return to hotel for Dinner. Overnight stay will be at Hotel.

Your third day begins with breakfast and then we proceed ahead to Khambat, the old Cambay to see the elegant Jammi Mosque built in the 11th Century AD. It is one of the best examples of Indo-Saracenic architecture.  After visiting some nearby monuments, we also visit the Indus Valley Civilization Agate Jewelry workshop in Khambat. To know more about one of the earliest civilizations of the planet, we drive to Lothal, the golden port of bronze era, literally meaning “the mound of the dead” buried under the earth which was excavated a few decades back by the Archeological Survey of India.  Here, we will visit site museum and archaeological site offering an insight into the town planning of the IVC. The same day, we head to Palitana, the city of temples, located in the heart of Bhavnagar district of Gujarat. The stay will be at a Heritage Hotel at Adpur Village of Palitana or Palace Hotel in Bhavnagar.

On the 4th day, early morning,you ascend the Shatrunjaya Hill near Palitana town to see the huge complex of about 863 temples crowning two ridges of the summit and also a beautiful scene of the Town and river Shetrunji from the top. After descending, we will drive ahead to Gondal to see the magnificent carvings and collections of the 1740 AD Navlakha Palace at Gondal.  The night stay will be at the Riverside Palace or Orchard Palace heritage hotel.

Your day 5th, will be a full day excursion to the old city of Junagadh to visit the ancient Uparkot Fort, splendid Gothic palaces of the Nawabs and the flamboyant 19th century mausoleum complex of Mohabbat Khan and Babi dynasty. This magnificent historical town has kept many memories of past in itself. While returning to Gondal, we will call in en route to visit the 4thcentury Buddhist caves of Khambalida, and the dinner and overnight will be at Gondal.

The 6th day starts with a drive from Gondal to Little Rann of Kutch via a museum at Rajkot. Post lunch, enjoy the wildlife safari or village by open jeep, and stay at Wildlife Resort in Little Rann of Kutch.

The day7 will start with a breakfast and drive to the 11thcentury Sun Temple of Modhera, which is one of the finest examples of Hindu temple architecture in western India. After visiting the temple, we continue to Patan to see the magnificently carved 11th century step well, Patan has over 100 beautifully carved Jain temples & many attractive traditional carved wooden houses. Rani Ki Vav is the oldest and the grandest step well in the state of Gujarat. It is situated at Patan and is believed to have been built during 1022 to 1063 AD. The construction was completed by the widowed queen Udayamati. It is the center for fine textiles particularly silk Patolasarees produced by the characteristic 'ikat' technique. Then we proceed ahead to Balaram via Siddhpur known for its mansions. The stay will be at the Heritage Resort / Hotel.

Your 8th day will start with a breakfast at the hotel and then a drive to see the Kumbariya Jain Temples and 12thcentury Taranga hill Jain Temples and to historic VadnagarToran. Then we continue to Ahmedabad.

The day 9, will lead a drive from Ahmedabad to Vadodara. In this cultural capital of Gujarat, you will have your hotels pre-booked. Later we visit TambekarVada and Govt. Museum.  Post lunch; visit Laxmi Vilas Palace, Qutbuddins Tomb of 15th Century, and free walk in evening. The dinner and overnight will be at the Hotel in Vadodara.

On the 10th day of your archeological tour, proceed to Champaner-Pavagadh archaeological park, which has magnificent works of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Stay at the heritage home in Jambugodha or at Champaner Heritage Resort.

The 10 day tour will take you centuries earlier in the past and coming back to Ahmedabad on the last day of the tour, you’ll be full of precious memories.
